Ballast resistors drop the voltage to your coil so you don't burn the points. If you are burning points out frequently you may want to replace yours. A reproduction of the original style 1955-1956 ballast resistor, # 099A will work on any 1957-1964 classic Chevy. These are 2 Ohm impedance.
